Nestled along the banks of the Deschutes River and at the foothills of the Cascade Mountains, Bend is an energetic city with a fast growing population of over 83,000. To the east of the city is high desert vegetation and to the west is U.S. Forest Service land.
Bend is noted for its pictursque setting, mild climate, growing economy, and diverse and vibrant culture. Locals and visitors engage in year-round outdoor recreational pursuits such as downhill and cross country skiing, rafting and kayaking, golfing, fishing, hiking, mountain biking, and much more.
At an elevation of 3,625 feet, Bend enjoys the predominately dry climate of the Great Basin. Sunny days, low humidity, and cool nights provide the most common weather pattern.
Bend, county seat of Deschutes County, covers 32 square miles. To the east is high desert vegetation and to the west, Bend is surrounded by U.S. Forest Service land.
Bend was founded in 1904 by a general vote of the community’s 300 residents and incorporated on January 4, 1905. A.H. Goodwillie was appointed the first Mayor. Twelve years later, Deschutes County was formed from the western half of Crook County, and Bend was designated the County Seat.
